Coming back to normal

October 18, 2013 by

For sixteen days the American government was shutdown, partially interrupting the flow of goods and services in some sectors, while others worried needlessly to the effects of their own jobs or what services would be cut. Now back in action, things can resume normally, almost.

Local schools, such as in Miami-Dade county, had stopped hiring amid the government crisis and kept 123 quality educators in limbo, because the e-system used to check the new hires’ eligibility is run by Homeland Security; the same department that furloughed its “nonessential” employees two weeks ago.

Another outrage that had more publicity was the Department of Education’s Office of Civil Rights, halting their investigations of universities suspected of mishandling sexual violence cases on their campuses (which is a violation of Title IX).

Also, many universities closed their veteran services or research facilities. Military academies were hit hard.

Now in the post shutdown, many employees need to come back to work to overflowing inbox and voice messages, and hopefully new teachers will come in and teach classes.

This month is very busy for monitoring and assessment including Race to the Top, where districts and states apply for grants and monitoring continues to audit states under the No Child Left Behind Act.

Had the shutdown continued, the Department of Education would have furloughed 94% of its employees and students K through 12 may not have been able to get school lunches next month.

What does it say about our country, when fiscal austerity measures are being put in place, and they decide to cut 94% from the education branch? How do you value education?

Is it priority in your life? Your children’s life?

Do not let your child be left out in the cold come January, when the government hits a fork in the road again.

As usual, Homebound Unlimited tutoring services are continuing at the Police Athletic League in Wilmington. Shutdown or not, we hold each child’s education as our top priority and continue to function as Wilmington’s premier academic support service.

Have a good weekend!
